Ming Lee Trading
About This Spot
Stepping into Ming Lee Trading is like uncovering a quiet, tucked-away corner of San Francisco’s Chinatown that invites curiosity and slow discovery. Located just off Jackson Street, this understated spot feels more like a local secret than a bustling market. The entrance leads you downstairs, easing you away from the city’s street noise into a calm, almost meditative space where time seems to slow. There’s a gentle rhythm here, a place where you can take your time and explore without the pressure or haste common in larger, more crowded grocery stores.
The mood is subtle and welcoming, leaning into the understated charm of a neighborhood staple that caters to those with a genuine curiosity for Asian culinary traditions. Rows of shelves quietly brim with an evolving selection of rice crackers, wafers, sauces, and spices — each visit feels like a small adventure, thanks to the frequently changing inventory and occasional new finds that surprise even regular visitors. While the refrigerated section is modest and focused on essentials, the heart of Ming Lee Trading lies in its rich variety of snacks and pantry staples, offering a tangible connection to the flavors and textures beloved across Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cultures.
Shopping here becomes an experience of mindful browsing; the air carries faint hints of spices and dried goods, evoking memories of shared meals and home kitchens where these ingredients come alive. It’s easy to imagine local families and longtime residents moving through the aisles for familiar staples, while newcomers linger with quiet excitement over unfamiliar treats. The cash-only policy adds a touch of old-school simplicity, reinforcing a sense of authenticity that makes this place feel grounded and true to its roots.
Ming Lee Trading is not about spectacle or flashiness — it’s about the steady joy of discovery, the peaceful satisfaction of finding a hard-to-locate ingredient, or stumbling on a snack that instantly becomes a favorite. It’s a spot where the atmosphere and the abundant, thoughtfully curated offerings quietly invite you to slow down and savor the small, thoughtful moments of everyday life.

Interesting place. It was a bit empty, when we went, so I am not sure if they were moving or restocking. What they had was pretty good, though, and the prices were reasonable!

Tons of groceries: Chinese, Japanese, Korean. Great prices and lots of choices. Go downstairs into the large grocery store and take some time to browse. Cash only. I found this place to be more reasonable than other grocers in Chinatown. Limited fridge items: milk, eggs, butter, cheese, etc. Tons of snacks and goodies.

My go to place for all the Asian rice crackers, wafers, lemon cookie thingies, sauces, drinks, spices, .... I can go on and on. It's easy to miss but once you are downstairs, there is so much selection. Selection is always rotating depending on their inventory and new shipments, so there's always a surprise every visit on discovering new snacks I've not seen previously. Price is very reasonable if not lower than average. Go in and explore! You will not be disappointed.

Nice little store with a large selection of Asian snacks. The workers here are very kind, and their prices are lower compared to other shops in the area with the same products. Can be a bit cramped inside, but that's fine.

Lots of snacky foods here! Enter through this small stairwell on the side. The sauces, noodles, and other cooking ingredients are further in the store past the registers. The snacks often change so if you find something you like, i suggest picking up more sooner than later.

The asian store is located down a flight of stairs so take a plunge and go down to see what asian snacks you can snag. There's a sandwich board that directs you to where the stairs are. It's actually a deceptively nice sized store filled with snacks, drinks, and all kinds of goods that a chinese market would have. I mostly see locals shopping here but I would occasionally spot a few tourists here and there usually heavily focused on the snack isles. Prices for items are pretty good to fair.
